Nusantara — The Spirit Archipelago

The Most Spiritually Layered Civilisation on Earth

The Indonesian archipelago — 17,000 islands, 300 languages, 270 million people — is arguably the most spiritually layered civilisation on earth. It is the world's largest Muslim nation, yet Bali remains a living Hindu kingdom. Java's Kejawen tradition synthesises Hindu-Buddhist cosmology, Islamic mysticism, and ancient animism into a single worldview.

The Memory of Sundaland

Beneath the Java Sea lies what some researchers believe is the memory of a lost world: Sundaland, a continental shelf the size of India that was above water during the last ice age and submerged around 10,000 BCE as glaciers melted. The oral traditions of the archipelago speak of a great flood that swallowed the homeland of the ancestors. The Austronesian seafarers who spread from this region to populate half the Pacific carried with them a cosmology forged in the experience of watching the sea rise and swallow the world.
