What is retrograde motion?
Retrograde is an apparent motion, not a real one. As Earth overtakes the outer planets on its faster inner orbit, or the inner planets overtake us, the planet seems to pause, retrace its path, and resume. The astronomy is honest optical perspective; the meaning read into it is the tradition's own. Mercury retrograde, about three weeks each cycle, is the famous one: the planet of messages appearing to walk backward through the sky of agreements and travel plans.
The retrograde tracker
This tool shows which planets are retrograde right now, with the exact dates each period begins and ends. Each retrograde carries its traditional reading: Mercury for communication and contracts, Venus for love and value, Mars for conflict and drive, the outer planets for the longer arcs of a life. For timing acts within a single day, the finer instrument is the planetary hours; for the lunar sky, the lunar mansions.
