Divination as Divine Communication
Ancient Egyptian divination was inseparable from religion. The gods spoke through dreams, oracles, sacred animals, and the movement of stars. The priests of Amun at Thebes operated one of the ancient world's most famous oracles, where the statue of the god would "nod" to answer questions.
Dream Incubation and the Sacred Calendar
Dream incubation — sleeping in temples to receive divine visions — was widely practised in the Serapeum and other sacred spaces. The Egyptian calendar itself was a divinatory tool: each day was classified as lucky, unlucky, or dangerous based on mythological events. The Book of the Dead, more accurately the Book of Coming Forth by Day, was a guide for navigating the afterlife with spells, passwords, and maps of the underworld.
