African Divination — Ifa, Sikidy, and Binary Systems

The Most Sophisticated Systems on Earth

African divination systems are among the most sophisticated on Earth. Ifa, the Yoruba system practised by the babalawo (father of secrets), uses 256 odu (corpus chapters) generated by a binary casting process. Ifa was recognised by UNESCO in 2008 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Binary Traditions

The structural connection between African binary divination (Ifa's 16 odu, expanded to 256) and the Arabic geomantic tradition (16 figures, expanded to 256 by the shield chart) is one of the most studied patterns in comparative divination. Sikidy, the Malagasy system, works with a similar binary generation process. These are not superstitions — they are formal information systems, refined over centuries of practice.
