West Africa — Ifa and the Binary Oracle

The Most Rigorous System on Earth

West African divination traditions, particularly the Yoruba Ifa system, represent some of the most intellectually rigorous divinatory practices in human history. Ifa uses a binary system of 256 odu (figures) generated by casting palm nuts or a divining chain. Each odu contains a vast corpus of oral literature including myths, proverbs, songs, and prescriptions.

The Babalawo and UNESCO Recognition

The babalawo (father of secrets) undergoes years of training to memorise this corpus. UNESCO recognised Ifa as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005. Beyond Ifa, West African traditions include spirit possession, herbalism, and communication with ancestors through libation and ritual.
