What is Fal-e Hafez?
Fal-e Hafez (فال حافظ) is the Persian practice of divination through the poetry of Hafez of Shiraz (1325-1390), the 14th-century Sufi mystic whose Divan is considered the greatest single work of Persian lyric poetry. A seeker holds a question in their heart, opens the Divan at random, and the ghazal that appears is the answer. This site offers a free online Fal-e Hafez oracle in English, Farsi, and Arabic, drawing on a complete corrected translation of all 495 ghazals.
The Tradition of Fal-e Hafez
The practice of consulting Hafez as an oracle has been a living tradition in the Persian-speaking world for over six centuries. Families gather on Yalda Night (the winter solstice) and Nowruz (the Persian New Year) to read Hafez together. Before a marriage, before a journey, before a major decision, the Divan is consulted. The poet Hafez — Khwaja Shams-ud-Din Muhammad Hafez-e Shirazi — is known in the tradition as Lisan al-Ghayb, the Tongue of the Unseen.
Hafez is to the Persian-speaking world what Rumi is to the West: the most-read poet, the most-consulted oracle, the voice people turn to when they need counsel. But where Rumi is read as a mystic poet in the West, Hafez is treated as a living elder in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and across the Persian cultural sphere — a wise friend who understands the human heart.
How This Online Oracle Works
The oracle selects a ghazal at random from the 495 corrected poems in the Divan. The selection is genuinely random — there is no semantic matching between question and poem. This is faithful to the traditional practice: the randomness is the engine, and the meaning is found in the mirror it holds up to the seeker's question. Readings are then interpreted by AI grounded in genuine Sufi scholarship, drawing out the symbolism of the wine, the beloved, the tavern, the rose and the nightingale, and relating each truthfully to your question.
