What is Geomancy?
Geomancy, known in Arabic as 'Ilm al-Raml (the Science of Sand), is a divination system that originated in the medieval Islamic world — likely in North Africa or the Arabian Peninsula — and spread across the Mediterranean, sub-Saharan Africa, and eventually into Renaissance Europe. The practice generates sixteen figures from patterns of dots made in sand (or, on this site, generated randomly), which are then arranged into a shield chart and interpreted. The Tradition of 'Ilm al-Raml
Geomancy is one of the most systematically developed divination systems in the historical record. The figures (sixteen of them, each with a name, an element, and a set of correspondences) are documented in treatises dating back to the 9th century, with the most influential medieval manuals written in Arabic. The system was transmitted to Latin Europe in the 12th century, where it was called geomantia and integrated with astrological correspondences. In West Africa, the same system developed into Ifá and sikidy, where it remains a living tradition. The shield chart structure — four mothers generating four daughters, which generate two witnesses, which produce a Judge — is the distinctive architecture of the Arabic form.
How Geomancy Readings Work Here
