The Buganda and the Balubaale
The Buganda kingdom of present-day Uganda developed a complex state religion centred on the Balubaale, a pantheon of national gods whose mediums (Mandwa) served as oracles consulted by the Kabaka (king) before every major decision.
The Maasai, the Kikuyu, and the Luo
The Maasai of Kenya and Tanzania maintain a direct relationship with Enkai, a single divine force present in both rain and drought, mediated by the Laibon, a hereditary spiritual leader. The Kikuyu communicated with Ngai through the sacred fig tree (Mugumo), and their prophets (Arathi) received visions that guided the community. The Luo maintain elaborate ancestor veneration, with the spirits of the dead (Juogi) remaining active participants in family life. Across the region, dreams are the primary channel through which the spirit world communicates with the living.
